John Landau, the Oscar-winning producer of ‘Titanic’ and ‘Avatar’, Dies at 63

John Landau, the Oscar-winning long-time collaborator of the renowned director James Cameron, died at 63. His death was announced by his family in a statement by Disney Entertainment but did not give a cause of death. 

Mr. Landau’s film ‘Titanic’ was a box office hit in 1997 and was the first ever movie to gross more than $1 billion globally. It was nominated for 14 Oscars in total and won 11 out of them, including the best motion picture. 

Its gross global income was $1.84 billion, only to be broken by another movie by Mr. Landau and Mr. Cameron in 2009, Avatar, a science fiction epic. 

John Landau: The Oscar-winner

He is most renowned for producing Titanic, the 1997 epic disaster film directed by James Cameron that set a record with 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Landau gained recognition as a reputable and skilled producer by working on several noteworthy films during his successful career. His talents in cinematic storytelling and his enduring influence on the film business are being honored with a deluge of tributes from the industry.

Landau was born in 1963 in New York City and was introduced to films by his parents, Ely and Eddie Landau, who were also producers of ambitious independent films. Landau studied at the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts in Los Angeles and worked later as a production manager for movies like ‘Honey, I Shrunk the Kids’. 

He also became the executive vice president of feature productions at 20th Century Fox, where he oversaw many hit films over the decades like ‘Home Alone’, ‘Mr. Doubtfire’, and ‘Speed’.
