Mahua Moitra TMC MP Charged for Comments on NCW Chief
Mahua Moitra TMC MP is now facing an FIR filed by the Delhi Police for her ‘derogatory’ remarks about NCW chief ‘Rekha Sharma’. The charges against Mahua Moitra fall under Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), which addresses actions intended to outrage the modesty of a woman, according to DCP (PRO) Suman Nalwa.
TMC MP Mahua Moitra and the Incident Leading to FIR
On July 4, Mahua Moitra made a comment on social media about a video showing NCW chief Rekha Sharma at the site of the Hathras stampede in Uttar Pradesh. Moitra’s post stated, “She is too busy holding up her boss’s pajamas,” referring to a man holding an umbrella behind Sharma. Although Mahua Moitra later deleted the post, it caused significant controversy.
NCW’s Response to MP Moitra’s Remarks
The National Commission for Women (NCW) responded promptly to Moitra’s remarks, demanding an FIR. The NCW’s IFSO unit filed the FIR on Sunday, stating that Moitra’s comments were extremely outrageous and violated a woman’s right to live with dignity.
Moitra has been booked under Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), which deals with actions intended to outrage the modesty of a woman. DCP (PRO) Suman Nalwa confirmed these charges.
In response to the FIR, Moitra publicly urged the Delhi Police to take swift action based on the NCW’s orders. She mentioned that she was in Nadia and available for any necessary proceedings. Moitra also shared screenshots from Rekha Sharma’s account, alleging that they contained “crude” posts, and requested the police register an FIR against Sharma as well.
The NCW, in its complaint, emphasized that Moitra’s crude remarks were a clear violation of a woman’s right to dignity. They urged the police to file an FIR and provide a detailed action report within three days, underscoring the need to address such remarks promptly under the law.
The situation involving MP Moitra and NCW chief Rekha Sharma highlights the importance of respectful communication, especially on public platforms. The actions taken by the Delhi Police and the NCW reflect the seriousness of the issue and the need to uphold the dignity and respect of individuals in all forms of dialogue.
