K P Sharma Oli’s Return to Office

On Sunday, July 14, K P Sharma Oli, aged 72, was appointed Nepal’s Prime Minister for the third time, succeeding Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda. His appointment followed Prachanda’s loss of a vote of confidence in the House of Representatives on Friday, July 12, where he received only 63 votes in favor and 194 against him in the 275-member House.

Following Prachanda’s defeat, K P Sharma Oli staked his claim to the Prime Minister’s office with the backing of Nepali Congress (NC) president Sher Bahadur Deuba. Oli submitted the signatures of 165 House of Representatives members—77 from his party and 88 from the NC—to support his claim.
