Two small spacecraft were successfully launched today from Sriharikota using the PSLV-C60 rocket. For the first time, ISRO will demonstrate the complex process of docking and undocking two spacecraft 470 kilometers above the Earth. Traveling at a speed of over 28,800 kilometers per hour, these spacecraft will first connect and then separate, a feat achieved only by a handful of nations. This innovation underscores ISRO’s commitment to developing advanced space technologies.

The mission involves two spacecraft named “Target” and “Chaser,” each weighing 220 kilograms. These will be launched in different directions, with the docking process set to begin approximately 10 days after launch. The Chaser spacecraft will approach the Target from 20 kilometers away, gradually reducing the distance to 5 kilometers, then 1.5 kilometers, and eventually to 3 meters. At this point, the docking process will commence, enabling the transfer of electrical power between the two.

This intricate operation will be controlled entirely from Earth, showcasing ISRO’s mastery over precision engineering and remote control technology. SpaDex is a landmark mission, laying the foundation for future space endeavors.
